About
History
Jerry Payto is a retired architect and the founder of Payto Architects, a firm renowned for its enduring contributions to Northeast Ohio’s built environment.
A native of Bedford, Ohio, Jerry’s career spans over four decades of dedicated design, leadership, and community stewardship. He holds an architecture and art degree from Kent State University and a Master’s degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University.
Prior to establishing Payto Architects in 1985, Jerry built a formidable reputation over 15 years as a partner at the major interdisciplinary firm Dalton, Dalton, Little, Newport, following foundational roles with Visnapuu & Gaede and Richard Fleischman. As an independent practitioner, Jerry prioritized sustainable design long before it became an industry standard, executing complex, award-winning academic, commercial, and civic spaces (such as major developments for Kent State University and landmark corporate structures like 901-1001 Lakeside Avenue).
Guided by the philosophy that architecture should seamlessly serve the public and foster community connection, Jerry’s portfolio reflects a rare balance of artistic expression, rigorous functionality, and contextual urban design. This archive showcases the milestone projects that define his professional legacy.

Payto Architects
Payto Architects was founded by Jerry Payto in 1985 in Cleveland, Ohio as an Architecture, Planning, and Interiors practice with the main goal of creating the most significant solutions to the myriad of opportunities. Payto Architects has always been based upon the belief that “we are no better than the people we surround ourselves with.” This means that we are not only critical of the team of people that represents the firm, but more important, the idea that anyone can have impact at any level they choose to commit to.
