The purpose of this committee was to review every project in downtown Cleveland as well as it’s neighborhoods. Critique of each proposal was made until it was sent to planning commission for approval. The commitment of two afternoons a month and additional review sessions for complex projects was worth being ale to assist the community in a small way.

Jerry Payto wa one of four founders of the committee with the missions statement “To create public art in public places to enrich our sensory perceptions in the environment.” It was the responsibility of the committee to create project opportunities, review and hire the artist, and secure the funds to complete he projects. This create opportunities for not only the downtown, but many of the surrounding neighborhoods. The committee has grown into what now know as Landstudio who oversaw the Cleveland Public Square project.

Jerry was one of the fourt that created the non-profit development corporation created due to the decline in the Brecksville downtown area. Payto Artitects assisted in creating a plan in which the city committed funds to make improvements to the streetscape as well as the town square. The plan also included assisting all the store owners in the downtown with direction to freshen up their respective storefronts. This two front approach created a mutual cooperation between the city and the store owners in order to revitalize the downtown environment.

One of the most significant outcomes from this board was bringing a segment of KSU’s graduate program to downtown Cleveland. What better way for a student to experience and be able to work within an urban design context.
